Roberto Bellatalla and Edoardo Marraffa met Saadik Laarach in 2006: he was “Gnawa di Essaouira”’s leader. They immediately started to work together developing their artistic affinity. Gnawa’s culture comes from the South of Sahara desert where they practice a complicated choral and musical liturgy in which they represent the primordial sacrifice and the genesis of the universe evoking the seven expressions of God activities, the seven mlùk, symbolized by the seven colors. Mlùk are evoked by seven melodic-rhythm cells (um), each of them starts a suite following Gnawa’s repertoire. During the seven suites they burn seven kinds of incense and dancers are covered by seven-colors veils.
