Since the ’80s, maverick Italian pianist Stefano Battaglia has been responsible for a stack of about fifteen records as a leader on the homegrown Splasc(h) label, as well as plenty of sideman appearances and discs elsewhere.
Before turning towards jazz, Stefano Battaglia studied classical piano at the Milan Conservatory.Since the late 1980′s he recorded a string of albums under his own name for the Italian jazz record label Splas(c)h. His debut album was ‘Things Ain’t What They Used to Be’. During the last years, he became internationally known for his concept albums on the renowned Munich-based record label ECM. On his first ECM double album Raccolta (2006), he payed tribute to his musical idols like Bill Evans and Paul Bley. His second ECM album (2007) is dedicated to his compatriot Pier Paolo Pasolini. The wide range of Pasolini’ oeuvre and impetuous life inspired Battaglia to his ‘Re: Pasolini’. Battaglia has taught at major Italian jazz seminars such as the “Siena Jazz” summer program and he recorded more than 60 CDs.

Bass player, composer, he studied classical guitar and contemporary composition.
Since 1978 he has been playing with many prestigious Italian, European and American musicians, among which: Pat Metheny, Enrico Rava, Dave Liebman, Lester Bowie, Aldo Romano, Tony Oxley, Paul Bley, Kenny Wheeler, Antonello Salis, Mick Goodrick, Adam Nussbaum , Lee Konitz, Paul McCandless, Paolo Fresu, Michel Pertucciani, Billy Cobham, Mal Waldrom, Leroy Jenkins, Glenn Ferris, Massimo Urbani, Don Cherry, Oliver Lake, Franco D’Andrea, Ran Blake, Nexus Quintet, Jimmy Owens, Daniel Humair, Don Moye, Manfred Schoof, Roberto Gatto, Misha Mangelberg, Manhu Roche, Han Bennik, Bill Elgart, Richard Galliano, Francis Bebey, Tony Scott, Sam Rivers, Dominique Pifarely, Claudio Fasoli, Kurt Rosenwinkel, David Murray, Dave Burrel, Stefano Battaglia, Sainkho Namtchylak, Uri Caine, John Taylor, Eliot Zigmund, Roswell Rudd, Norma Winstone, Dave Binney, Alex Sipiagin, Nelson Veras, John Tchicai, Mark Turner, Bill Stewart, George Garzone and many others. Tours in all Europe, United States, Russia, Israel, Australia, New Caledonie, French Polinesia and Colombia.

Born in Bari in 1961. Featured in Big Bands, as singer, between 1990 and 1994, with the JAZZ STUDIO ORCHESTRA.
From 1994 to 1995, he lived and performed in LOS ANGELES in many Jazz Clubs with his own project dedicated to NAT KING COLE. He studied with GENE MERLINO vocal improvisation.
Since 1997, he sings with the ITALIAN BIG BAND conducted by MARCO RENZI. He took part in 1997 in an ITALIAN NATIONAL RADIO BROADCASTING called “Stasera a Via Asiago” producted by Adriano Mazzoletti on RAI STEREO DUE. In May of 1999 recorded on his name the album “Nuttin’ But Nat” devoted to NAT KING COLE, in which play Franco Cerri (g), Fabrizio Bosso (tp), Massimo Manzi (d), Guido Di Leone (g).
This cd has been introduced by Giuliano Fournier in a radio broadcast of the National Swiss Radio “RETE 1″.
In the 1998, he used to be the pianist of the Italian singer NICOLA ARIGLIANO.
In 1999, he partecipated in a TV MUSIC SHOW on RAI RADIOTELEVISIONE ITALIANA dedicated to NATALINO OTTO, as singer of the signature.
